D23Expo19-The Art of Costuming-Iracebeth, The Red Queen Worn by Helena Bonham Carter (Alice Through the Looking Glass 2016)
Iracebeth, The Red Queen Worn by Helena Bonham Carter (Alice Through the Looking Glass 2016)
Costume Design by Colleen Atwood
“In Alice Through the Looking Glass, the Red Queen is in a deconstructed version of her original Red Queen look, so it was hard to get the dress to a point where it looked ruined enough, but still resembled the original costume…We made it look old and broken, as if she had been dragging it around the forests of the Outlands for the past three years…

Mirana The White Queen Worn by Anne Hathaway (Alice in Wonderland 2010)
Costume Design by Colleen Atwood
“I had this concept for Anne that she was this magical, almost Stepford-y, fairy-tale fantasy character. We just wanted to make her kind of silly and girly and full of light. I used layers of silk fabric that I screened silver snowflake patterns on, and then put the layers over each other. So you didn’t really see the snowflake pattern, but it sort of moves in the light nicely.”

Costume Design by Colleen Atwood
I felt like for me, each fairy tale is set in a world-like (Johnny) and Little Red’s is in that 30s, swing kind of vibe costuming. l used a lot of woodcuts reference and illustrations from the 20s and 30s which references that sort of style a lot in fairy tales. So it wasn’t really a conscious thing. I just set the mood with where I thought the music was going.

Costume Design by Anthony Powel
“I had to create a very original look I started with her silhouette She’s such a spiky and forceful person that I wanted her silhouette to be striking and exaggerated-in at the waist out at the hips with shoulders you can impale somebody on”
