This year was the fifth annual Her Universe Fashion Show, and was our first time attending. This year was themed milestones. This was the twenty-fifth anniversary of Nightmare Before Christmas. The twentieth anniversary of The Powerpuff Girls, the tenth anniversary of Star Wars The Clone Wars, and as I said before the fifth anniversary of the Her Universe Fashion Show, “making geek couture no longer an oxymoron”. This year Ashley Eckstein stated in the intro video “represents countless journeys.”
The founder of Her Universe, and our host for the evening Ashley Eckstein, came onto the runway this year in a one of a kind gown, designed by Andrew MacLaine, the audience winner from the 2014 Her Universe Fashion Show. He created Ashley the first ever couture gown made of Funko Pops, consisting of Jack Skellington Funkos of various sizes. The gown was more construction project then clothing design, with multiple trips with odd questions at the hardware store. It was constructed of 500 Funkos, and weighed over 40 pounds, taking 3 weeks to construct. Andrew MacLaine joined her on stage wearing a burlap Oogie Boogie dapper suit, encrusted with bugs.
Following Ashley Eckstein’s entrance, last year’s winners line was premiered on the runway.
2018 Her Universe Design Competition
This year’s lineup was 24 amazing designers, representing their favorite fandoms through couture fashion.
This year in honor of the twentieth anniversary of The Powerpuff Girls, Her Universe held a junior Fashion Design Competition, sponsored by Cartoon Network. At this year’s Fashion Show the winners walked the runway in their designs.
