Tanya Apuya hails from San Pedro California, where she has made her name creating costumes for local theaters, bringing characters to life. She learned growing up her favorite way to express herself was through her clothing. Combining her love of design with her passion for storytelling she got into theatrical costume design.
Tanya sees geek couture as a way to express her many loves and fandoms, allowing girls liker her to embrace the growing representation of strong female characters in geek culture.
Tanya Apuya’s entry this year is based on Godzilla, who previously was called the King of Monsters, but nobody before that had said if the creature was male or female. Tanya produced by hand a cape and blouse which have scales and ridges similar to the eponymous character. Her cape substituted for the powerful tail of Godzilla capable of knock down buildings but perfect for sweeping down the runway for a dramatic turn. She finished off the look with a head ridge/tiara and a mean growl.
