The Heroes and Villains -Art of Costuming Exhibit at D23 Expo 2019 was spectacular. Having the opportunity to see the actual costumes designed for Disney movies was exciting! The fabrics and details used for each costume made me want to see every production again.
There were several unique renditions of the Cinderella costume, produced over the past 20+ years and each one was very special. The Anna Kendrick rendition of Cinderella from “Into the Woods” was constructed using gold lame with a square neckline, puffed sleeves and a draped skirt. The shoes she wore even included gold leaves to match the gown and carriage. The Lily James Cinderella included a fitted bodice and full skirt constructed using tulle and lame, (both blue), with a ruffled tulle neckline. The Brandi, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella’s gown included a lace, off the shoulder bodice with a prelim waistline and a full tulle skirt. The “Once Upon a Time” Cinderella’s gown included a full skirt constructed from embroidered blue tulle with a blue taffeta underskirt. The bodice was bordered with “floral petal” detail on the shoulders.
There were also many other productions included in the Art of Costuming exhibit. The “Mary Poppins Returns” costumes included the coat Mary wore while she was out with the children. The red coat with navy accents was a, flared at the hip, midi length, creation with navy button closure. One of the other costs Mary wore was navy and included a tailored, midi length, large lapel style with pocket flaps on the hips, while she carried her carpet bag, and “bird handle” umbrella. She also wound a loosely crochet point scarf around her neck. The second coat that Mary Poppins wore was a navy and black striped twill fabric fashion, with a belted waist, square navy buttons, and a cape effect over the shoulders. The coat was paired with a red and navy polka dot silk scarf inserted in the neckline.
There were many unique fashions from the movies, and I thought that the girl’s dress displayed from “Tomorrowland” was interesting. The fabric in which the dress was constructed was a print with various grids and equations. Every detail was thought of to represent the movie. Each costume in the Art of Costuming exhibit was interesting and I look forward to seeing future exhibits.
