Jane Burson is a native of Austin Texas and has always had a passion for historical costumes, fandoms, and art. Her fascination began at a young age where she said she preferred to study and play with the clothes for her Barbies, versus the dolls themselves, paying attention to the textiles and designs. This interest grew to her studying material culture through the ages. To her geek culture is the marriage of fandom, fan and creativity, and Geek fashion, “is doing what clothing has always done” which is to allow people to convey their identity, ideology and passions.
Jane Burson’s entry to the Her Universe Fashion Show 2018, is based on the wizard Howl, from Hayao Miyazaki’s film Howl’s Moving Castle. She combined Howl’s bird form and a gender-swapped version of his human form. The dress and headpiece were made with feathers and included a train that resembled a tail.
